Two Birds brewing in Victoria produce a couple of good ales, and this red ale is a superbly smooth and flavoursome beer which warms you up at the end of the day.
The Two Birds bottles are easy to find on the shelf with a distinctive black and monochrome gradiented background, with two little birds on the front. This Sunset Ale is a striking dark red-sky colour which matches the red ale colours.
This beer is deep and rich in colour, with a dark red and light head. It matches the bottle nicely. There is not a lot of carbonation which does not produce a large head, and the head dissipates quickly, but this beer should be flatter and not sparkling.
You are immediately assaulted by grapefruit, hops and biscuit aromas, that leap out of the glass. A quick swirl and these aromas just dance about.
The grapefruit flavour is one of the first to hit your tongue when you drink it. But just like the aromas, the biscuit and a slight malt flavour come out to lift up the smooth beer body into a silky smooth red ale that glides down your throat. Finally the beer migrates into a slight bitter hops aftertaste with a hint of grapefruit to finish.
Summary. A superb smooth and rich beer with wonderful grapefruit and biscuit flavours which slide down wonderfully at the end of the day. Drink at cellar temperature to bring out the best of this excellent beer.
