4 stars, abbey ale, Malt Shovel, smooth, smooth body, strong
Abbey Ale is a monastic ale by the Malt Shovel brewery, as part of their revamped ale range. The only indication that is comes from this brewery is the Malt Shovel bottle cap, this is a wide departure from their normal beers. Glossy and strong, this beer is full of flavour without being overpowering with alcohol. You can smell the strong alcohol, but the tastes are of honeysuckle, and cheese, with a smooth body that fits the image of a good old-fashioned beer. You do notice that this beer is stronger then most, but it is not too overpowering, except with the aroma before you drink it.
Summary, a very smooth strong ale, with light flavours and a reasonable aroma. If you like your Belgian ales then you should like this.
