Märzen by Little Creatures is a German-style heavily hopped beer brewed to last from March to the Octoberfest festival without going off. Similarly to the British India Pale Ale, this is a beer with a lot of flavour to last a long voyage, either in space or time. This beer is a strongly hopped full bodied beer with plenty of alcohol without being too heavy like a strong dogbolter. It is moderately gassed and sweeter than an IPA.
This beer looks quite gassy, as there are large bubbles in the glass, and the head is chunky and coarse. But it does not taste that way. You can taste the bubbles, but they are not overwhelming. This beer dances in the glass, and with its light brown colour and self-generating head it actually looks quite interesting in the glass.
What does this beer smell like? I cannot tell! I have a blocked nose. What a shame, I can guess it would be a blast of Saaz hops and malt. You will have to try it and tell me. I can taste it though, and my first thought was “Mmmmm nice”. It is initially sweet, with some malt and alcohol flavours. When the initial hit wears off, you get the more mellow hops flavours without being bitter the beer moves into a smooth body beer. Finally, the alcohol flavours and hops finish off the beer in an aftertaste. This is a monster flavoured beer with multiple levels, and the sweet alcohol flavours running through the beer.
Summary. Märzen is a full-bodied sweet hopped beer which definitely hits you from the glass with both hops, malt and alcohol tastes. It is a little too heavy to be really refreshing from a hot summer day perspective, but in the middle of winter with it at cellar temperature, then you cannot get better than a glass or two after work.
