Hightale ale from the Mountain Goat brewery is a dark red ale with a medium pleasant hop and bitter aroma. The finely tuned flavours are balanced and make for a very nice beer if served at cellar temperature. The Hightale ale is a small batch from an independent brewery with no preservatives, thus is highly recommended by this reviewer.
The moderately gassed ale produces a striking head, and this complements the dark red colour of the ale, certainly one to enjoy out of a glass rather than in the bottle.
A wealth of hops strikes you from the glass first of all, but there is a mix of the malt, and also slight citrus aromas which go with the hops and malt to balance the punch after punch of hop aroma. This beer is not overly hopped, but just strong enough to give you a hit before you drink it.
When you start to drink this beer, the moderate carbonation and hops initially hit your tastebuds. But then on the middle of the drink there is a slightly acidic undertones of citrus fruit as well as caramel, to mix with the bitter hops. This is not an off-beer acidic taste, but one that is well mixed and certainly appreciated giving the beer depth of character. Finally there is a subtle malt and hop aftertase which finishes the beer off very well.
Summary. This is a highly recommended beer which is best served at cellar temperature. The mix of hops and citrus flavours are well balanced and go well with a strong aroma and body.
